Press Release: Arts Festival Invites You to See ‘The Queen’

A Merseyside arts festival will be rolling out the red carpet for a royal visit – of sorts.

The Prescot Festival, in June, will feature a special screening of The Queen, the 2006 feature film that won both an Oscar and a BAFTA for star Dame Helen Mirren. The event coincides with Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, marking 60 years since she her coronation.

The 10-day festival’s traditional Proms-style finale will also have a royal flavour in honour of Her Majesty. The winner of a Merseyside-wide short story competition, a first for the festival, will be announced at the concert.

Also on the programme this year is a visit from the Liverpool Mozart Orchestra, a ‘Brass & BBQ’ evening, and a recital by the world-renowned musician Richard Lea, organist of the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King.

“We’ve always aimed to offer music and arts for everyone at an affordable price,” said festival founder and director Dr Robert Howard. “The 2012 Prescot Festival will be no exception to the high quality we’ve established since our first festival in 2005. There’s classical, choral, acoustic and brass band music and much, much more on offer.”

The Eighth Annual Prescot Festival of Music and the Arts runs from Friday 15 to Saturday 24 June. The full programme is available online at the official website,
