Day 7: Barn Dance, Dinner, Acoustic Night & Open Mic

child pianoCongratulations to Ethan Cheung (Year 4) and Sonny Fielding (Year 9) for winning the Primary and Secondary categories, respectively, in last night’s Young Instrumentalist of Prescot competition.

Pianist Ethan, from Holy Family Catholic Primary School, Halewood, astonished the audience and judges with the technically demanding German Dance in C, by Joseph Haydn. It was a performance full of contrasts and character.

Sonny, from St Edmund Arrowsmith Catholic Centre for Learning in Whiston, scooped top prize for the second year running with his performance of Blumenlied, by Gustav Lange. The depth of feeling Sonny invested in the piece was obvious to all – his passion for the piano really shone through.

To get a flavour of the pieces, listen to recordings (not of Ethan and Sonny, alas – but almost as good!) below:

Well done also to the following students, all selected by their schools to represent them in the competition: Ava Rendell (guitar, Year 4, St Andrew the Apostle Church of England Primary School, Halewood), Bethany Chadwick (piano, Year 5, Cronton Church of England Primary School, Cronton), Daniel Hitchen (violin, Year 6, Evelyn Community Primary School, Prescot), Daniel Owens (piano, Year 5, Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School, Prescot), Paul Ordinario (piano, Year 4, Whiston Willis Community Primary School, Whiston), Aaron Godfrey (drums, Year 9, St Edmund Arrowsmith Catholic Centre for Learning, Whiston).

You’re spoiled for choice at the Prescot Festival tonight.

At 7.30pm, the Festival Barn Dance & Dinner takes place at St Paul’s Church. Call 07762 607 618 today to reserve tickets, or there’s a chance of tickets on the door (£6, including food) – but if you’d rather chill out with a pint, there’s an Acoustic Night & Open Mic at The Old Mill pub from 8.00pm till late (free). See you later!
