Press Release: 2015 Short Story Competition Now Open

Pile of booksAn arts festival wants budding fiction writers across Merseyside and Halton to pick up their pens for the chance to win a cash prize.

The 11th Annual Prescot Festival of Music & the Arts is offering £100 to the best short story on the theme ‘Treasure.’

Previous themes for the competition, now in its fourth year, have included ‘Reunion’ and ‘War & Peace.’ In 2014, the theme ‘Journey’ inspired Jill Herring to write ‘The Wheelbarrow Race,’ a whimsical yet touching tale about two brothers and their elderly grandma.

A panel that includes a librarian, a secondary school teacher and a writer will judge the 2015 submissions and pick a winner.

“It’s been a joy to discover some very talented writers through the contest,” said festival director Dr Robert Howard.

“We’ve had entries that have really pulled at the heartstrings or made us laugh and smile, and we look forward to more stories of the same high standard this year.”

Entry is open to all unpublished writers resident in Merseyside and Halton. Stories can be up to 1,000 words, and must be inspired in some way by the theme ‘Treasure.’

Full entry details are online at prescotfestival.co.uk, where you can also read 2014’s winning story.
