2020 Prescot Festival Come & Sing: Handel’s Messiah

Sorry – this event is now cancelled.

Sopranos, altos, tenors and basses are once again invited to join the Prescot Festival Chorus for its annual ‘Come & Sing.’

This year’s event takes place on Saturday 20 June, and the main programme item is Handel’s Messiah (excerpts). The performance opens with the anthem For Mary, Mother of Our Lord, a setting of John Raphael Peacey’s words by festival director Robert A Howard.

James Luxton (Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King) conducts, and Peter Kwater (St Bartholomew’s Rainhill) accompanies on the organ.

In the second half of the concert, singers are invited to stay for a performance by Liverpool Cathedral’s outreach choirs, including the Gilbert Scott Singers (formerly Liverpool Cathedral Youth Choir) and Liverpool 64.

The venue is Prescot Parish Church (Church Street, Prescot, L34 1LA), and relevant dates and times are as follows:

  • Wednesday 17 June 7pm-9pm Rehearsal
  • Saturday 20 June 3pm-5pm Rehearsal
  • Saturday 20 June 7pm Concert

The Meeting Room will be open between 5pm and 7pm for you to eat and drink (bring a packed dinner – tea and coffee will be available). Concert dress is smart, black-and-white. Feel free to bring audience members – tickets are £5 on the door.

The cost is £5 per singer, which includes score hire (or you may bring your own if you have one – the Handel’s Messiah edition is Novello, ed. Proust).

Selected movements are as follows:

  • 1. Overture
  • 4. And the Glory
  • 12. For Unto Us a Child Is Born
  • 22. Behold the Lamb of God
